Makeup Brush Hack

I have a confession to make: I don’t clean my makeup brushes often enough! It’s so important not only for your brushes, but also for your own health to get all of the makeup and bacteria off the brushes. The only problem is: I am kinda broke after my move to New York, so I wanted to find a cheap alternative to purchasing a new brush cleaner. I’ve heard baby shampoo works wonders, but I didn’t want to shell out any money if possible!

I came across this BuzzFeed video in which they cleaned a beauty blender with dish soap and olive oil. I already had both of those items just chillin in my kitchen, so I decided why not try it on ALLLL of my makeup brushes.

At first it sounded like a strange combo, but dish soap and olive oil actually make a lot of sense to clean brushes. Dish soap was designed to kill bacteria and make dishes clean enough to eat off of, so it’s pretty much guaranteed to kill the germs and flush out a ton of makeup. Dish soap can also be pretty drying on the skin, so on its own it would most likely dry out the bristles of the brushes. This is where the olive oil comes in. It’s full of hydrating and nourishing nutrients which are normally great for conditioning your hair, but also works to condition the brush bristles!

There are a lot of mixing ratios you can find on the internet, but I just eyeballed it and put about equal parts of olive oil and dish soap. I was a little bit skeptical at first because the mixture looked so funky, kinda like a lava lamp.

I was AMAZING with the results. Particularly with my duo fiber brush! I”ve had this brush for about 2 years and the bristles have been stained pretty much ever since the first time I used it. The dish soap and olive oil made the bristles look almost as good as new and they were finally white again!!

My makeup brushes were also insanely soft from the olive oil.  My only advice is to make sure that you rinse out the brushes as much as possible! I rinsed some brushes better than others and the bristles got a little bit clumpy. Overall, this hack was amazing and I highly recommend trying this trick!

NYX Liquid Suede Lipsticks

So I have to confess…I tend to be a bit of a snob when it comes to lipsticks. I normally only buy prestige brands. However, back when I was working at Ulta I became fascinated with NYX because of all of the rave reviews I was hearing. I’ve tried NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Creams and High Voltage lipsticks in the past, but I’ve recently preferred obsessed with liquid lipsticks, so I was ready to try something new from NYX.

Purchasing Experience

I went to the NYX store at the Mall of America during the after Christmas sales where I began swatching their Liquid Suede lipsticks. I’ve always wanted to try a bold blue and bright lavender, but I’ve been hesitant to spend the money on a risk. I found three shades I adored! The first one, Jet Set, a deep navy blue and the second, Sway, a very bright lavender and a deep dark violet, Subversive Socialite .screen-shot-2017-02-11-at-12-25-10-pm

As I was walking up to the checkout counter I saw a box of three liquid lipsticks shades including the two shades of purple for only 10$!  Needless to say, my experience at the store was fantastic, I walked out with four brand new shades of lipstick for only 17$, which is cheaper than one single tube of a typical liquid from a prestige brand!

In my experience, the darker the lipstick the more difficult it is to wear, so I tested the toughie first, the deep purple: Subversive Socialite. It definitely is the most similar to one of my favorite lipsticks, Anastasia Beverly Hill’s shade Sad Girl. The first thing I noticed is the coverage of fantastic! It was very easy to apply and only took 1 or 2 coats to get a deep full color.

img_6562This stuff STAYS ON. I’ve always struggled with the infamous “butt-hole lip” when it comes to dark liquid lipsticks. NYX Liquid Suede stayed on all night regardless of all of the food and drinks I inhaled. I only reapplied to touch up my inner lip once, and it was barely noticeable in the first place! In fact, I had to vigorously scrub my lips to get the color off which was almost a downside.

My only complaint about the lipstick was the comfort. It was extremely drying on the lips, similar to covering your mouth with tar;however, the mild discomfort is definitely worth it for the color payoff, length of wear and low price.

Welcome to New York: My Incredible First Day in the Big City

Authors Note: I was going to write a post about my first week in New York, but it has been a complete whirlwind! Instead of writing a whole novel on my first week, this will be my first post of my Novice in New York series:

Hello Lovelies,

I’ve moved many times quite a few times, but never as drastic (and hopefully permanent) as my recent relocation to New York City. I arrived in New York at 8pm on a Monday with three large suitcases, collectively weighing almost twice my body weight. I was completely tired and overwhelmed, stumbling through JFK with monstrous suitcases and somehow managed to get myself safely into a taxi.

I arrived at my elevator-less apartment and my incredible roommates helped me carry everything upstairs. Obviously, because I was moving from a small town in Minnesota, aka Cow Town USA, I didn’t have any furniture for my teeny tiny room. Once again, my amazing roommates Jen, of Speckled (check out the site’s relaunch here!) and Jorge let me borrow an air mattress and extra comforter. I can’t imagine what my first night would have been like without them!!

My first day was INSANE!!!! I started the morning with an interview at a temp agency, because I’m a broke, unemployed, recent college graduate. The woman at the agency was incredibly nice and enthusiastic. She met me, explained a little bit about their process and told me to email her with my weekly schedules. The meeting only lasted about 10 minutes and it was so simple I thought it was too good to be true.

About 5 minutes after I left the agency, unsure of when or if they would find me a job, my temp agent emailed me with a three day gig in Manhattan from Wednesday-Friday of that week! AMAZING!

After the interview I explored the city a little bit. Not even looking for anything in particular, I just walked…and walked…..and walked. Did I mention I was wearing brand new black leather heeled booties and it was raining cats and dogs? Yep.

I met Jen for lunch at her work and she showed me around the amazing Refinery29 offices. The creativity, setup, determination and style of every single person there was unreal and completely inspiring.

After lunch, we parted ways and I navigated the subway system by myself (I still haven’t gotten lost! I’m sure it’s going to happen eventually.) I sat on the train, my feet throbbing from walking about 8 miles in a partial downpour. I got home to my basically bare room and collapsed onto the slowly deflating mattress on the floor, contemplating when I would have the strength to get up and buy groceries… Then something else incredible happened.

My good friend Bailey texted me with free tickets to the Islanders game. Why would I ever turn down free hockey ticket? A few minutes later she instructed me not to eat dinner because the tickets included a free buffet. She told me to meet her at the Calvin Klein gate at 7PM. When I arrived I found out the Calvin Klein was another name for the VIP entrance. Bailey and I sat in the front row of the game, and ate every kind of food imaginable without spending a dime!

My first 24 hours in New York definitely aren’t common, but they were such an incredible way to get welcomed to the city!

Makeup Haul

IMG_5916 copy

If this is your first time reading, hello my name is Kayleigh and I’m a makeup addict. I recently took another trip to Ulta and purchased much more than I intended. I’ve been using these products for about 2 weeks now so I have a few impressions about them. In addition to new makeup products, I also purchased some new skincare products which I’ll write about in a post soon! I’m wearing all of my favorite new products in the picture above, and scroll down to hear more about my newest makeup addictions!

The Lorac Pro Contour pallet has become my new go-to product this summer! I love my Anastasia Beverly Hills cream contour, however it takes a lot more time to apply and blend out. The Lorac pallet is fast, easy and creates great results! I also think it looks a lot better on top of a powder foundation that the cream contour pallet.

As for the Lorac Pro 3 pallet I’ve got slightly mixed feelings about it. Color-wise, I love it! The pigmentation is great and the colors are fantastic for everyday wear and the deeper shades are perfect for a night out. However, I find that the shadows are bit too soft and crumbly. With every single touch of a brush, the shadow breaks up and the dust goes everywhere. It’s not exactly a deal breaker, but I do think that it’s wasting quite a bit of the product. Just my personal opinion! Also a HUGE chunk of the Terracotta broke off just two days after purchase.

I’ve been gaga over the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara for so long. It’s been my go-to mascara every day since I first purchased it. However, I found something new that I also adore. Smashbox’s X-Rated mascara is perfect for creating drama! I won’t say too much about it here because I’ll be posting a side-by-side comparison of X-Rated versus Better Than Sex soon!

I purchased two different concealers recently: The Urban Decay Naked Concealer and the other by NARS. I was using the Naked concealer while I was living in England and it always did the trick. However, when I came back to America I purchased the NARS concealer and I began alternating between the two. Not surprisingly, the NARS concealer has much better coverage! I find the Naked one a bit lighter, but I definitely prefer NARS.

First of all I want to start out by saying, I love Ulta. Their samples are amazing. With my last bulk purchase I received a free sample of Smashbox’s eyelash primer. So far I have only paired it with the X Rated Mascara but it definitely creates thick, dark lashes! I’ll write more about it in my Mascara comparison blog later, but so far it rocks.

So far I love all of the products I purchased. I’m using almost all of them daily except for the Naked Concealer. Let me know if you want to see more in depth reviews of the products above! Stay tuned for more hauls including a clothing haul! ❤

Hello It’s Me… (Finally!)

Helllooo, it’s me. FINALLY!
First of all I want to start off by apologizing! I haven’t blogged in about a year now and I’m sorry I suck. This past year had been full of highs, lows, existential crises and (did I mention?) traveling the world! There really isn’t a proper excuse I can make for the reason I haven’t written in so long, so I’m sorry. I promise I wasn’t being a complete couch potato! The past 6 months I spent traveling throughout Europe, experiencing new cultures, eating incredible food, stalking a few too many wild cats and finding myself again. Studying abroad isn’t always all that it’s cracked up to be though. Stay tuned for the details and I’ll be sharing the highlights, and of course lowlights, of my time in Europe.

Adulting is hard. In the next month, I’m gearing up to begin my final semester of college, so my stress levels are at an all time high! Job research, cover letters and interview tips to come. Senior year is exciting, but also slightly terrifying. Check back here to see how it feels to take the plunge into the real adult world.

What about the makeup?! Don’t you worry your pretty little face! I’m still plenty obsessed with beauty products and my empty wallet will back me up! I recently took a trip to Ulta and purchased a ton of new products ready to review.

Also more news, I mentioned the food in Europe is AMAZING! In fact, it was so good that I helped myself to a little bit more than I should have. I am now 12 days into a new diet a workout routine that has cut down my bloating and given me the energy of a 10 year old! Details to come.

So this is the relaunch of my blog! In just a few weeks I’m headed back to Madison to begin my Senior year of college, find a job, struggle with my trust issues and continue to spend all of my money on makeup and clothing. Also speaking of my existential crisis, I’ll finally share my lifelong struggle with anxiety and techniques I’ve learned to cope with it. Follow all of my (mis)fortunes here! Here is the Truth about Beauty, Fashion and Love (Plus Travel)!

NYX High Voltage Lipsticks

I have to admit when it comes to makeup, I’m kind of a snob. I really only like to spend money on the high end bScreen Shot 2015-11-10 at 4.20.24 PMrands and I rarely give cheap cosmetics a chance. However, I recently purchase two different High Voltage lipsticks from NYX and I was pleasantly surprised by the results. I purchased Shade 02 which is a deep berry perfect for fall and shade 06, a bright class red!

BerryLipWhile I still believe that the high end lipsticks go on and stay on better, NYX lipsticks are wonderful for casual wear and the color pay off is fantastic. They are highly pigmented and go on very smooth. I found the berry shade, 02, to be very similar to my favorite Urban Decay Lipstick, Shame. It isn’t quite as bold of a color as my urban decay or Anastasia lipsticks, but it’s still a great quality for the price. I find my dark Urban Decay lipsticks tend to get EVERYWHERE if I eat or drink anything while wearing them, not to mention if they smear on my face there’s a good change I’ll look like a clown for an hour or two. However these NYX lipsticks come off quite clean and leaving a subtle stain on my lips for a little extra color even after my morning coffee has rubbed it away.

As for shade 06, I absolutely adore it. It’s a very classic bright red lip and extremely affordable. This one stains my skin a little bit more than the berry shade for some reason, but it’s still much easier to clean up the edges than other brands. Both Lipsticks are an excellent alternative to the high end brand. I purchased both of these NYX lipsticks at Ulta for 6$ each!

Long Lasting Curls: Hot Tools Ceramic Tapered Curling Wand Review

Like most women, I have struggled with styling my hair for years. I was born with stick straight hair and always craved a little more texture. I have been curling my hair for years, but I could never seem to get my curls to hold as long as I want them to. After many mistakes with faulty curling irons and even one perm gone horribly wrong, I finally found something that works for my hair type!

I have been a major fan of Hot Tools for years. My 1” gold barreled curling iron has been my go to beauty tool for ages. I love the look I can achieve with it, but no matter how much hair spray I use the curls always fall flat fast. A friend of mine suggested I use a ceramic curling iron instead and I shrugged the suggestion off thinking it wouldn’t make that big of a difference.

Boy was I wrong….

Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 9.46.05 PM

I finally went out and purchased  a ceramic hot tools curling wand, instead of the typical metal iron. The look I achieved was much much different, as this wand is tapered and creates curls with more volume up top and a tighter curl at the bottom. The combination of the ceramic iron and tapered curl create tight long lasting curls.
For the first time in my life I curled my hair one day, applied a thin layer of spray and wore the tight curls for an entire day. After a long night sleep my hair had relaxed into gorgeous loose waves. In the past, I was lucky to have my curls last a full 5 hours and now I get two days of wear simply by switching to a new beauty tool.

I got my Hot Tools curling iron on sale at Ulta. It’s completely affordable and I will definitely purchase more sizes in the future.

Workin for the Future

Oh summer,

I’m officially over a month into summer and I can officially report that I haven’t done anything that remarkable, yet. While some people are off exploring other countries, bar hopping, and embarking on adventures: I am sitting on my couch updating my Netflix queue. Okay I guess that’s not alllll that I do. I spend every single day working. I am severely broke this summer and trying to save to go abroad, so obviously I need to work.

This all may seem pretty normal except for the fact that I am working 4 jobs now. Yes, 4. That is not a typo. I work front desk at a hotel, as a Beauty Advisor at an ULTA , I have an internship as a communications coordinator and today I began helping out with a wedding planning company. You say summer; I say work! By the time I get done with my days I’m usually just too tired to do anything but have a glass of wine with my roomies and pass out on the couch watching the latest season of Orange is the New Black.

Decor from the most recent wedding I worked on

Although I’m working 4 different jobs, it’s surprisingly not all bad. I’m missing out on things, but doing it specifically to save money. Obviously when you work multiple jobs you may have to give up going out with friends occasionally. But I’ve found that it just makes the nights you do spend time with friends even more special. I am saving up to Study Abroad next spring. So yes, for the next 7 months I will be working my butt off to save money. I might miss out on a few things, but I know it will all be worth it when I finally make it to Europe!

I only have three semesters left of college, so I’m trying to figure out which industry I would like to work. I’ve always been interested in weddings, travel, fashion and beauty and all of my jobs help me explore what it’s like working in these fields. So yes, working 4 jobs is tiring and tough but it’s worth it to make the connections, gain the experience and save extra money for the future.

*Mini* New Beauty Hall

Hello Lovelies,

So I recently took a trip…or more like 3…to a couple of my favorite cosmetics stores.I picked up a couple new products from Sephora and one from Macy’s that each add a breath of fresh air to my summer makeup collection!Picture1

I purchased the majority of the new items from Sephora. I only picked up a couple items and I had to stop myself from draining my bank account on makeup. The first product I picked up was the Anastasia Beverly Hills duo angle and spooly brush. I have been majorly neglecting my eyebrows lately, so I decided it was about time I splurge on them a little bit. In addition to helping my brows stay on fleek, the angled brush also works great for applying eyeliner. I bought this brush from Sephora for $18.

I also picked up the Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro Pencil. Someone recommended this product to me because it is great for multiple purposes. Apparently it works as a concealer, highlighter and even an eye shadow base! I personally invested in this pencil because I am addicted to dark lipsticks and I tend to make a mess. This pencil works great to clean up the edges  to create the perfect bold lip. This pencil was $20 at Sephora. Fingers crossed that I never have accidental clown lips again!

The last product I picked up was the Better Than Sex mascara by Two Faced. I know I’m super late to the party with this one, but I don’t purchase mascaras very often. I’ve been using the Benefit They’re Real for about a year now and it’s nice for natural looking lashes, but I generally prefer dramatic makeup looks. I already love Better Than Sex because it truly does create that drama I’ve trying to create with other products. It does get a little bit clumping, but by layering this mascara with a different one with a smaller, lighter brush, eyelashes don’t clump quite as much.

So that’s all that I picked up from Sephora, but I had to stop by Macy’s to pick up one last product. I also purchased another liquid lipstick by Anastasia Beverly Hills. I got the shade Sad Girl in the past, and it’s my absolute favorite lipstick ever! But with Summer time the shade is a tad too dark, so this time I bought the shade Neon Coral. I’m definitely not used to buying something so bright and orangey pink. I’m typically attracted to darker colors, but I think this lipstick is a great summer color. Although I think I’m a tad bit too pale for it right now, I know that I’ll get a lot of use out of this shade all summer long.

So that’s it for my recent cosmetic purchases, but it’s definitely not all that I bought recently! I also took several trips to the mall and bought a ton of clothing and accessories. Clothing Haul coming soon!
